Think Outside the (Jewelry) Box: Non-Traditional Celebrity Engagement Rings

Go Green

Halle Berry once famously swore she'd never marry again, but perhaps she just hadn't met the right ring yet? When Oliver Martines proposed with a diamond and emerald Robert Mazlo stunner, the actress said yes. As the Parisian designer himself told Hello Magazine, the ring "symbolizes the couple's story," and contains hidden symbols--which can only be seen by the wearer--set into the textured gold band. Sourced from the jungles of Colombia, the four-carat emerald, which is flanked by diamonds, was declared "perfect" by the jeweler, much like Ms. Berry has been described by countless admirers throughout her career.

Feeling Blue

Model-actress turned breast cancer advocate Elizabeth Hurley shows off a vibrant sapphire and diamond engagement ring featuring an unusual square cut stone. The stone's brilliance is uniquely highlighted by trillion-cut white diamonds on each side. Hurley's fiance showed he's more than just a player on the Australian cricket fields wwith this winning choice. Another celeb who recently went the sapphire route was Glee's Matthew Morrison, whose model girlfriend Renee Puente is flashing a dazzling sapphire stone, surrounded by a constellation of micro-pave diamonds.

Drop Dead Red

A roundup of precious stones isn't complete without the radiant ruby, and Jessica Simpson is proud to show off the 5-carat rock she received from Eric Johnson. Designed by celebrity jeweler Neil Lane, the radiant ring features an unusual design, thanks to pear-shaped side stones. If Dorothy got married, we're thinking it would have been with this very ring on her finger--the perfect complement to the world's most famous sequined slippers.

Beyond the Pale

While diamonds will always be a girl's best friend, no one said they had to be white. Sunny-hue loving brides include Rebecca Romijn, who wears a 6-carat yellow diamond from Jerry O'Connell; and Carrie Underwood, whose hockey player hubby Mike Fischer also went with yellow. Pink, meanwhile, is Mariah Carey's signature color, and we'd expect nothing less of her engagement ring than her emerald cut pink diamond, a 1t-carat whopper from Nick Cannon, which he presented to her in lollipop form! Reese Witherspoon, meanwhile, shows off a super-sparkly, exceptionally rare 4-carat Ashoka-cut diamond set into a platinum band and surrounded by pave diamonds, a gift from talent agent hubby Jim Toth, who clearly knows how to pick them.

An engagement ring lasts forever...although "forever" can be a more variable term when it comes to celebrity marriages. By choosing one that speaks to your personal style and sensibilities, you'll make a permanent love connection equal to the one with your intended.
